Professor Paul Urbach Visited CIOMP-A New Start Will Begin between European Scientific Institutes and CIOMP

Author: |

The immediate Past President of the European Optical Society Prof. Paul Urbach from Delft University of Technology visited Changchun Institute of Optics, Fine Mechanics and Physics (CIOMP) on January 29th. His visit can be considered as a new start between European first-class Institutes and CIOMP.

During his three days stay at CIOMP, Prof. Urbach had many practical communications with CIOMP. On January 29ththe CIOMP Vice President Prof. ZHANG Xuejun welcomed Prof. Urbach and gave a talk of introduction to CIOMP. Prof. Urbach said,“It’s amazing that CIOMP scientists have achieved so much progress in research on applied optics and optical design. I hope deep cooperation in many areas such as scientific research and joint education can be achieved under our congregate efforts”.

On January 30th Prof. Urbach made a presentation titled ”New Method for Optical Imagining” to CIOMP researchers. He mainly talked about the imaging theory of high NA systems and the link that exists between vectorial point spread functions and fields in image space with maximum electric field components. At the same time he also introduced the new progress his group had achieved recently. More than 40 CIOMP staff and students attended the talk. Prof. WU Yihui, the Vice Director of the State Key Laboratory of Applied Optics (SKLAO), expressed her great interests in this talk because of similar research areas, and would like to discuss further cooperation with Prof. Urbach.

Accompanied by WANG Hui, the Vice Director of the Division of International Cooperation, Prof. Paul Urbach also visited the National Engineering Research Center for Diffraction Gratings Manufacturing and Application, the Chinese Academy of Sciences Key Laboratory of Optical System Advanced Manufacturing Technology and the Gpixel INC.

“It gave me deep impression the work you had done. We can cooperate in many areas in the future. I hope my visit would be a new start between us,” said Prof. Urbach.

As we all know, the United Nations proclaimed 2015 as the International Year of Light and Light-based Technologies (IYL2015).The visit of Prof. Urbach is a good opening of the celebrations of the IYL2015 by CIOMP

CV: Prof. H. P. Urbach has a PhD from the University of Groningen. Until 2008 he was a principal scientist at Philips Research Laboratories in Eindhoven. In 2000 he became part-‐time professor Diffraction Optics in the Optics Research Group of TUD and in 2008 he became leader of this group. His main expertise is electromagnetic modeling of problems of applied optics and diffraction optics. Current research concerns optics for (O) LEDs, optimization of focused fields for sensing and meta-‐materials for high resolution. He is Member of the International Commission of Optics, immediate Past President of the European Optical Society, Member of the Dutch URSI committee, Member of the Advisory Committee of the Dutch Government on Metrology and member of the Dutch national photonics initiative “IOP Photonic Devices”.
