Prof. ZHANG Xuejun Elected 2016 SPIE Fellow

Author: |

Each year, the Society of Photo-optical Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE) elects a limited number of distinguished and extraordinary scientists to be SPIE Fellows. In 2016 SPIE bestowed this honor to CIOMP Vice President Professor ZHANG Xuejun. Prof. ZHANG was one of only 32 scientists from around the world and the only scientist from China or the Asia-Pacific to be elected this year.

Prof. ZHANG said, “I thank SPIE for the honor of electing me a SPIE Fellow. It is not only a great honor for me, but also international recognition of the research work at CIOMP. I look forward to being able to tell the world about the excellent work of CIOMP’s researchers via the events and publications of SPIE, the international society for optics and photonics.”

To be elected as a SPIE Fellow, scientists have to demonstrate significant scientific and technical contributions to optics, photonics and imaging via a rigorous selection process. Prof. ZHANG has been honored by SPIE for his achievements in optical system design, manufacturing, testing and management. Prof. ZHANG’s most outstanding achievement comes from his work as the Research Director of the CAS Key Laboratory of Optical System Advanced Manufacturing Technology. He successfully led this group to complete several national research projects and won four National Awards for his achievements. Prof. ZHANG is now in charge of five national projects and also leads the 30 Meter Telescope Tertiary Mirror Manufacturing team.

To communicate his research work, Prof. ZHANG has published more than 40 articles in international journals and has presented dozens of times as an invited speaker at conferences and universities. His contribution to the research community is demonstrated by his long involvement as a member on several SPIE conference committees, as session chair, as speaker and as author. As Vice President of CIOMP, Prof. ZHANG has facilitated and encouraged many scientific events, which have been milestones in the development of Chinese optics and photonics. His role in senior management at CIOMP is testament to his dedication, talent and commitment to the field of optics and the optics research community.

About CIOMP

The Changchun Institute of Optics, Fine Mechanics and Physics (CIOMP) was founded in 1952 and focuses on luminescence, applied optics, optical engineering, and precision mechanics and instrumentation. There are currently 2,089 professionals working at CIOMP, including 4 CAS academicians, 229 professors and 587 associate professors (as of June 2015).

CIOMP now hosts an International Optoelectronic Innovation Cluster, 6 State Key Laboratories and research centers, and 2 CAS Key Laboratories. There are more than 20 high-tech companies in the CAS Changchun Optoelectronics Industrial Park with investment support from CIOMP and total assets of 403 million USD. CIOMP is also a key base for CAS graduate student education. It offers 8 masters degree programs, 6 doctoral degree programs and 3 postdoctoral programs. Currently, CIOMP has 929 graduate students, of which 451 are completing a Ph.D.
