CIOMP holds Open Day to celebrate the centenary of the Optical Society of America

Author: |

To celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Optical Society of America (OSA), the world’s oldest and most influential optical organization, and to commemorate the first Chinese Aerospace Day, CIOMP held a widely visited Open Day on 24 April. Under the theme of “Science and technological innovation, dreams of the future”, the event was the second CIOMP and International Optoelectronic Innovation Cluster Open Day.

Volunteers from the CIOMP OSA / SPIE Student Chapter organized a series of Seed of Light lectures on popular science in optics. Seed of Light events aim to engage, excite and educate students of all ages about optics and its potential in their lives. The lectures attracted nearly 1000 secondary school students and optical science enthusiasts – an outstanding show of support from the general public for CIOMP’s work.

Professor ZHANG Xuejun, Vice President of CIOMP, was one of the distinguished presenters. He detailed the background and significance of the Open Day and encouraged people to explore the colorful world of optics and experience the magic of optical technology, both of which will foster positive change in the world.

Dr YUAN Jingze followed with an outstanding presentation, which was accompanied by interesting and imaginative experiments on optical phenomena. Dr Yuan also described the establishment and development of the OSA and its importance in the promotion and facilitation of international connections between optics and photonic researchers and enthusiasts.

CIOMP also held a student painting exhibition and a friendly competition with the theme “My story with light” to help celebrate the centenary. Academician WANG Jiaqi awarded prizes to several students who had made outstanding efforts, and he joined a wonderful group picture with the students.

The Open Day was a great success. The many interesting and probing questions from the students during the lively Q&A session brightened the volunteers’ day with the knowledge that the next generation of optical scientists is in rapid development. By engaging participants and encouraging their keen curiosity about light, the Open Day fostered interest and enthusiasm in optics – thus reflecting the ambitions of CIOMP and the OSA.
