CIOMP Delegation Visits Switzerland with China’s Minister of Science and Technology

Leading scientists from Changchun Institute of Optics, Fine Mechanics and Physics (CIOMP) accompanied Wang Zhigang, Minister of Science and Technology of China, on a visit to Switzerland between October 9 and 11, 2019.

Zhang Xuejun, CIOMP Vice President, Ye Xin, Deputy Director of CIOMP’s Space Department and Professor Zhu Ping were all invited to attend the 8th session of the China-Swiss Joint Committee on Scientific and Technological Cooperation, and a technical seminar with Fraunhofer Institute for Physical Measurement Techniques IPM.

During the meeting and seminar, Chinese and Swiss scientists and officials held in-depth discussions on the two countries’ science and technology innovation policies, strategies and plans.

They also exchanged ideas on their collaboration in basic research, innovation and entrepreneurship, as well as how to support joint research projects, exchange of scientific researchers, docking and exchange of innovative enterprises, etc.

Minister Wang Zhigang and Guy Pamelin, Head of the Department of Economic Affairs, Education and Scientific Research of the Swiss government, watched as CIOMP Vice President Zhang Xuejun and Dr. Walter J. Ammann signed a Letter of Intent Between The Changchun Institute of Optics, Fine Mechanics and Physics of the Chinese Academy of Science and the Physikalish-Meteorologisches Observatorium Davos / World Radiation Center.

The two institutes have maintained a good working relationship for years. With the new document signed, CIOMP looks forward to further expanding its cooperation with PMOD/WRC in fields such as the detection of solar spectral radiation, earth radiation, space weather, and ultraviolet and extreme ultraviolet radiation.

CIOMP hope to explore in-depth exchange opportunities with PMOD/WRC in academic and scientific research. The two institutes are looking into creating a joint Swiss-Chinese solar radiometry laboratory under the Belt and Road Initiative.

In addition, CIOMP scientists also reached an agreement with the German Fraunhofer Institute for Physical Measurement (IPM) that they would carry out in-depth cooperation in the field of space climate research instrument development.

Switzerland was one of the first western countries to recognize and establish diplomatic relations with China. 2020 marks the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Switzerland.
