Changchun Institute of Optics, Fine Mechanics and Physics (CIOMP), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS )was founded in 1952. Led by a group of scientists represented by Wang Daheng and Xu Xurong, CIOMP has created more than 10 “The First in China” such as the first ruby laser and the first large theodolite. More than 1700 research projects have been completed, among which 450 projects have been awarded including the Special Prize of the National Science and Technology Advancement. As for its great contributions to China’s science and technology development, economic construction and social progress, CIOMP had been honored as “The Cradle of China’s Optics”.
Aiming at the innovation of knowledge and high-tech, CIOMP is a multi-disciplinary and comprehensive research institute. It is engaged in fundamental research, applied fundamental research，engineering technology research and high-tech industrialization. Covering the main disciplines of luminescence, applied optics, optical engineering, precision mechanics and instruments, CIOMP has 13 research departments, laboratories and centers, including the State Key Laboratory of Applied Optics, National Engineering Research Center for Diffraction Gratings Manufacturing and Application, the National Supervision and Test Center for Optics Mechanics Quality and the Key Laboratory of Excited State Processes, CAS. There are 1803 staff members in CIOMP, including 4 members of CAS or CAE, 161 professors, and 291 associate professors. Being one of the core bases for doctoral education in CAS, CIOMP has 3 postdoctoral research stations, 6 centers for doctoral degree studies, 8 centers for master degree studies, and its total enrollment of graduate students , postdoctoral research fellows and visiting professors have been reached to 965 and 44 respectively.
CIOMP has always attached importance to the academic exchange and cooperation with international science and technology communities and has established an extensive scientific cooperation and exchange relationship with more than 30 countries by hosting international conferences, exchanging visiting scholars and participating in co-projects, etc. This gives effective support to increase the capacity of competition in research, and to cultivate the best professionals. CIOMP has also played an important role in scientific and technological fields in the world.
Now with its 1km2 total area, optimal structure, advanced functional facilities and beautiful environment, Changchun OE Industry Park has reached the standard of middle level industrialized countries and has formed. It is becoming the base of scientific research, product development and professional training in optoelectronic field in China.
