Sixty years ago, the first laser was successfully fired on May 16, 1960 by Dr. Theodore Maiman. Seven weeks later, Dr. Maiman and his employer, Hughes Aircraft Company, presented laser to the world at a press conference in Manhattan. Dr. Maiman was granted a patent for his invention, received many awards and honors for his work. Dr. Maiman’s experiences in developing the first laser and subsequent related events are described in his memoire, The Laser Odyssey.

Sixty years on, laser has become one of the most widely used innovations of the 20th century. It is part of our everyday life, widely used in manufacturing, medical diagnosis and treatment, beauty industry, telecommunications, military, etc.
