My Story with CIOMP

Author: YU Cun |

It was December 2018. Changchun has properly entered winter, with snowflakes flying, icy winds constantly beating every pedestrians in the street. Christmas was only half a month away, so the streets took on a vague festive air, but my mood was nothing but anxious, because I was waiting for an important interview.

On that day, I came to Changchun Institute of Optics, Fine Mechanics and Physics (CIOMP), Chinese Academy of Sciences for the first time as a job seeker. As I entered the gate, I was attracted by the huge and imposing building, and thought it would be great to work here. After arriving at the conference room on the third floor, it was soon time for the interview. I vaguely remember that one of the interviewers asked me: Do you know what CIOMP is? How much do you know about it? To tell the truth, I was not familiar with CIOMP at all, knowing just a few scraps of information gleaned from the Internet on my way to the interview. But I also knew that's not a good answer. So I worked up the courage and said: I really want to work in your unit, I will work hard, please give me a chance, I will not disappoint you.

Walking home after the interview, I kept replaying the interview in my head and praying that I would be chosen. Sure enough, I was lucky enough to receive the personnel notice a week later and I was officially hired.

From the first day I joined the CIOMP until now, CIOMP has become an inseparable part of my life. It has influenced my way of thinking and my life choices, and added a lot of colors and delight to my previously dull life.

When I first started working, I could always see notices of foreign academic reports. I also personally participated in many large international conferences, which seemed to me like a large international platform at that time. Later, as I got familiar with the achievements of the institute, I gradually found that the scientific research achievements that could only be seen on TV before were actually independently developed by our scientific research staff. At that time, I did not mention to colleagues how much I admired them.

From Aviation and Aerospace to Detection and grating, from the international journal Light: Science& Applications to LIMIS and Light Conference, From X-EUVI imager, EXTREME Ultraviolet camera to wide-angle laser imager, CIOMP has made outstanding achievements in all aspects, which makes me feel proud to be part of such an outstanding organization.

At the beginning, I only knew that CIOMP was the first institute to specialize in the research of optics since the founding of the People's Republic of China, but now I have a general understanding of the achievements in all directions of CIOMP. I understand better the charm of CIOMP.

In the last three years, I have learned new things, made new understandings, and marked new growth every year. In terms of career development, CIOMP has provided me with a huge platform for development, creating many opportunities which enabled me to constantly learn new things, learn and make progress. In terms of personal growth, I have constantly improved my own capabilities, built confidence and accumulated a sense of accomplishment.

Finally, I would like to say that I am grateful to CIOMP for choosing me that winter three year ago. It has always been my pride and joy to be a member of CIOMP, and I would like to strive to prove that I am worth of this esteemed institute for the rest of my life.
