Ms. Hui Wang, Deputy Director of the Office of International Cooperation in the Changchun Institute of Optics, Fine Mechanics and Physics (CIOMP), Chinese Academy of Sciences, is featured as one of the Faces of Optica, a special feature marking the rebranding of the internationally respected Optical Society.
Optica, previously known as The Optical Society or OSA, changed name on Sept. 20, 2021.
The society was first founded in 1916 as the Optical Society of America. In 2008 the name was changed to The Optical Society. The latest name change “is intended to position the society to further advance optics and photonics to solve some of the world’s most challenging problems,” explains Optica, which has a global membership of 430,000.
Faces of Optica, which contains the portraits of 66 members, is intended to showcase and celebrate the diversity of the global optics and photonics community.
Ms. Wang, one of six members featured from China, says her appearance in the feature is a mark of CIOMP’s position as one of China’s top optical research institutes and its global presence.
Popularly known as “the cradle of China’s optics”, CIOMP is celebrated for many decades of excellence in research and engineering, and has also been actively engaged in international academic and research exchange. “The Society is a valuable collaborator of CIOMP” , describled by Ms. Wang when she told her story with Optica.
It jointly publishes two journals with the Nature publishing group, including Light: Science and Applications, one of the most respected optical journals in the world.
CIOMP currently also jointly produces iCANX Story, a special series of interviews with globally celebrated scientists featured on the iCANX platform.
In addition, CIOMP also holds an annual “Rose in Science” event which is designed to celebrate women’s achievement in science. In 2021, the Rose in Science featured a penal discussion with guests including Nobel Laureate Dr. Donna Strickland; Ms. Liz Rogan, CEO of The Optical Society (OSA); Prof. Carmen Menoni, president of the IEEE Photonics Society; Prof. Johanna Stachel, the first female president of the German Physical Society; Prof. Leda Lunardi, chair of the IEEE Fellow Committee; Prof. Haixia Zhang, founder of the iCANX Talks platform.
