Hosted by UNESCO’s International Day of Light, CIOMP’s journals (Light: Science & Applications, eLight, Light: Advanced Manufacturing), and technically sponsored by IEEE, Asia Light Conference (ALC) - the academic conference of the inaugural Asia Photonics Expo - was grandly held at the Sands Expo & Convention Center in Singapore, from March 5th to 8th.

The plenary session was chaired by Prof. Cheng-Wei Qiu (ALC General Chair, Dean’s Chair Professor at National University of Singapore, Co-EiC of eLight) and Prof. Yuhong Bai (Deputy Chief Editor of Light: Science & Applications). With Prof. Hong Jin (Vice President of CIOMP, President of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Changchun Branch) delivering the opening speech, Prof. Yun-Feng Xiao (Boya Distinguished Professor at Peking University, Co-EiC of Light: Science & Applications) presented the talk of ‘Light is a brand’. Following that, Prof. Xiang Zhang (President of the University of Hong Kong, member of the US National Academy of Engineering), Prof. Alexandra Boltasseva (Ron and Dotty Garvin Tonjes Distinguished Professor at Purdue University), Prof. Shanhui Fan (Joseph and Hon Mai Goodman Professor at Stanford University, member of the US National Academy of Engineering) and Prof. Vladimir M. Shalaev (Robert and Anne Burnett Distinguished Professor at Purdue University) addressed the plenary talks.

In addition to plenary session, ALC hosts 10 parallel keynote & invited sessions, in which Prof. Yanqing Lu (Vice President of Nanjing University), Prof. Baohua Jia (from RMIT, member of Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering), Prof. Che-Ting Chan (Vice President of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology), Prof. Mordechai Segev (member of the US National Academy of Sciences and the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities), Prof. Xuehua Wang (former Vice President of Sun Yat-sen University), Prof. Uriel Levy (from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem), Prof. Hongbo Sun (Changjiang Chair Professor from Tsinghua University), Prof. Xiaogang Liu (from the National University of Singapore, member of the Singapore National Academy of Science), Prof. Zhipei Sun (from Aalto University, member of the Finnish Academy of Science and Letters), and Prof. Robert J. Zawadzki (from the University of California, Davis) delivered keynote speeches. More than 50 leading scientists from all around the world presented the invited talks. Meanwhile, the poster session is hosted parallelly, and based on the votes from the judging committee, 10 posters stood out as Best Poster Award Winners.

Noteworthy, this is the first time that ‘Light’ brand hosts a large conference out of its homeland China. In this debut, ALC attracted participants from 17 countries worldwide. As reported by Xinhua Finance, ALC showcases an academic feast. ALC further enhances the international collaboration and talents resources for CIOMP, and marks CIOMP’s exploration in combining journal publishing with research, production, and education.
With ‘Light’ family journals and their branded events, ‘Light’ will continue to serve as a cultural and scientific name card for CIOMP globally.
