Light Plus Everything, Shining the Future: Light Conference 2024 is grandly Hosted

We are extremely proud to announce the significant success of the Light Conference 2024, held at the Northeast Asia International Conference Center in Changchun, China, from June 17 to 21, 2024. This event was co-hosted by the Organizing Committee of the UNESCO International Day of Light, Changchun Institute of Optics, Fine Mechanics and Physics (CIOMP), Chinese Academy of Sciences, Chinese Optical Society, IEEE Photonics Society, and China Science Daily, and organized by the Light Publishing Group, ScienceNet, and iCANX Association.

The opening ceremony was held in the afternoon of June 18th and hosted by Prof. Daping Chu, Founding Director of the Cambridge Centre for Photonic Devices and Sensors (CPDS) at the University of Cambridge, and Co-Chair of the conference. Prof. Martin Booth, Statutory Professor of Electrical Engineering in the University of Oxford, Co-Chair of the conference, delivered the welcome speech on behalf of the conference organizing committee. He extended sincere greetings to all attendees and expressed gratitude for the great support from the hosting institutions. The conference covered 11 themes and gathered leading scholars in the field of optics and related areas, aiming to provide a high-quality platform for academic exchange and the collision of ideas for all participants.
Academician Xuejun Zhang, President of CIOMP, Fellow of Chinese Academy of Engineering, Co-Chair of the conference, congratulated the successful convening of the conference and expressed heartfelt thanks to all guests. Leveraging the Light journal brand, CIOMP has established extensive cooperation and exchanges with numerous top research institutions worldwide. Academician Zhang emphasized that CIOMP will continue to play to its strengths in the field of optics, uphold an open and cooperative attitude, and promote international academic exchanges and cooperation in optics. Hope this conference would serve as an opportunity to explore infinite possibilities in optics and foster the vigorous development of the optical industry.

Prof. Xi-Cheng Zhang, from the University of Rochester, foreign member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and Co-Editor-in-Chief of Light: Science & Applications (Light), shared the remarkable achievements and future vision of Light. He highlighted that Light has evolved far beyond a journal. It has collaborated closely with editors across 21 leading optical countries and 25 international offices, continually unearthing significant original innovations in the field of optics and published over 1800 high-level papers, including 12 contributions from Nobel laureates by now. With an impressive H-index of 157 and more than 100,000 citations from 129 countries and regions globally. Light is also the only journal honored by UNESCO as a Gold Medal Partner for both the International Year of Light and the International Day of Light.
The journal features viewpoints and growth experiences of outstanding scientists in optics. So far, 61 top scientists, including Nobel Prize winners and academicians from various countries, have been recognized in Light People. Through initiatives like the global Rising Stars of Light, Seed of Light, National Optics and Optical Engineering Doctoral Academic League, and Light Young Scientist Forum, Light actively discovers and supports young talents in the field of optics. Its sister journals eLight, Light: Advanced Manufacturing, Light: Nature & Health, and eGastroenterology, aim to enhance interdisciplinary communication and cooperation, and have been highly praised since inception.
Since its launch in 2011, Light Conference has attracted over 6000 scientists from more than 30 countries, becoming a renowned event in the international optics community. Prof. Xi-Cheng Zhang expressed his gratitude to experts and scholars for their invaluable contributions to Light's rapid development. In the future, Light remains committed to anchoring itself in optics with a global perspective, aiming to become an academic journal with far-reaching impact, fostering innovation and advancement in the field of optics in collaboration with experts and scholars worldwide.
The opening ceremony also included the award ceremony for the 2023 Top 10 Social Impact Events in China’s Optics (Light10), and Light outstanding editors, reviewers, and papers awards in 2023.

The conference featured plenary talks, keynote talks, 11 thematic seminars covering topics such as the Theory and Technology of Optical Precision Measurement, Biophotonics, Metaverse/AR/VR, Microscale Light Matter Interaction and Lasers, Vectorial and Dynamic Optics and Photonics, Integrated Lithium Niobate Photonics, Optical Imaging and Metrology, Luminescence and Its Applications, Advanced Large-Scale Photonics Integration, Topological Photonics and Unconventional Light Manipulation, and Advanced Optical Devices and Systems, the final of 2024 National Optics and Optical Engineering Doctoral Academic League. It attracted over 800 distinguished academicians, experts, scholars, students from 18 countries to share cutting-edge academic achievements and profound industry insights through plenary talks, keynote talks, invited talks, oral talks, conference posters, and offline finals of the doctoral student league.

The offline finals of the 2024 National Optics and Optical Engineering Doctoral Academic League was also successfully held during the conference. Twenty finalists from 13 prestigious universities and research institutes, including Peking University, Tsinghua University, Zhejiang University, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, CIOMP, gathered together for a remarkable competition that featured numerous optical experts from around the world. The finals showcased intense competition and vigorous debates and were broadcast live both online and offline, attracting over 100,000 online viewers. The event concluded with an award ceremony on the afternoon of the 20th. Since its inception in 2021, the National Optics and Optical Engineering Doctoral Academic League has become a cornerstone event for Light, creating a multi-dimensional platform for fostering academic exchange, talent cultivation, scientific problem refinement, and engineering technology showcases.
To delve into the future development of Light, the international editorial board meeting and symposium were held during the conference, which were hosted by Prof. Xi-Cheng Zhang and Prof. Yun-Feng Xiao, respectively, Executive Editor-in-Chief Prof. Hongbo Sun of Tsinghua University, Academician Xuejun Zhang of CIOMP, and over 40 editorial board members, director of Light international office, and editorial staff from more than ten countries gathered to outline the blueprint for Light's future development. Key focus areas included further strengthening exchanges and collaborations with the international optics community to advance the journal's internationalization; providing enhanced services for readers and authors, supporting and encouraging young scholars and researchers with more academic opportunities and platforms to foster sustainable development in the field of optics; strengthening the promotion and publicity of the journal and enhancing its brand influence.
Participants unanimously emphasized the core principle of prioritizing academic quality at Light. In this spirit, the editorial board actively offered suggestions and recommendations, aiming to leverage Light's leadership role in optics to further promote global prosperity and development in optical research.
The editorial board inauguration and the 6th editorial board meeting of Optical and Precision Engineering was also held. Editor-in-Chief Jianlin Cao delivered an enthusiastic speech, reviewing the journal’s development and expressing gratitude to all contributors. He handed over the position of Editor-in-Chief to Prof. Liangcai Cao from Tsinghua University and became the honorary Editor-in-Chief. The new editorial board, comprising advisors, the Editor-in-Chief, discipline executive editors, and board members, will continue to uphold scientific, fair, and efficient principles to ensure the journal's quality and impact. Optical and Precision Engineering, established in 1959, focuses on publishing high-level theoretical and applied research works in modern applied optics and precision engineering. It has received numerous accolades, including being listed as a T1 journal in the High Quality Scientific and Technological Journals Classification Catalogue, won the nomination award of the third China Publishing Government Award Journal Award, and won the honor of China's outstanding academic journals with international influence for many times. Looking forward to the future, Optical and Precision Engineering will continue to uphold the development concept of openness, innovation and leadership, adhere to its positioning as an authoritative journal in the industry, and lead the research direction in the field of optical and precision engineering.

The closing ceremony was held on June 21th. Prof. Xi-Cheng Zhang hosted the ceremony. He expressed gratitude for the enthusiastic participation and support from all attendees, which contributed to the success of the conference, and delighted to see that everyone has thoroughly enjoyed the sessions, discussions, and networking opportunities that this conference has offered. This is the original intention and unremitting motivation of the Light Conference. During the closing ceremony, awards for best paper and poster were also presented.
Academician Xuejun Zhang delivered the closing remarks, affirming the conference’s success and expressing gratitude to all global experts and organizing committee members for their hard work and dedication. He highlighted that the conference focused on "cooperation and win-win" and showcased the latest research and applications in optics and photonics, discussing future trends in optoelectronic technology. The rich content and diverse formats, including high-level academic reports, thematic seminars, and doctoral league, provided a high-level platform for academic exchange and innovation. This conference will be a significant milestone in advancing scientific progress in optics and promoting international cooperation.
With the end of the Light Conference report session, participants engaged in extensive industry and cultural visits in Changchun. They toured CIOMP, CRRC Changchun Railway Vehicles Co., Ltd., and the Imperial Palace of the puppet Manchukuo, gaining a deeper understanding of Changchun's key industries and cultural heritage.
This grand event gathered top experts and scholars from the global optics and related fields, showcasing the latest research and cutting-edge technologies. The successful conclusion of the conference is not only a summary of past achievements in optics but also an outlook and expectation for future optical technological development.
