On 24th July, the 2024 ‘I'm a CIOMPer’ English Speech Contest was successfully held in 512 classroom of Daheng College, jointly sponsored by the Graduate School of Changchun Institute of Optical Machinery and the Optical Society of Changchun Institute of Optical Machinery.
The contest aimed to improve students’ English speaking and presentation skills, effectively activate the atmosphere of English learning on campus, activate enthusiasm for English learning on campus, and promote the development of graduate students' English courses.
Judges for the competition included Professors Jie Zhao and Qianqiu Xu from Jilin University, Professor Yifan Zhang from Changchun Institute of Humanities, Researcher Zhiming Shi from CIOM, and Professor Georgiy Sapunov from Russia.
The host of contest, Liu Han, introduced the Optical Society and explained that the competition was designed to encourage students to discuss the frontiers of science and technology, youth innovation, and hoped the event could help give students’ international perspectives, improve their English skills and reform English teaching.
Contestants passionately addressed the topic “How light is changing the world” and engaged judges in lively question-and-answer exchanges. Dado Tsegaye Bojago, an international student from Ethiopia, won the first prize for his presentation on ‘Corpuscular Theory of Light’!
Making the summarizing speech, Ms. Hui Wang of the Graduate School pointed out that the practice of English speaking should be highlighted in the school. She encouraged students to actively seek out opportunities to communicate with international students and faculty members so as to put what they have learnt into practice.
